It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world. The First Congress of Independent African States was held in Accra, Ghana on 15 April 1958. The idea of slavery or slave trade was not foreign to Africa before their contact with the Europeans.There is evidence that Africans were involved in the slave trade through the trans-Saharan and ocean slave trade . The trans-Atlantic  slave emerged as a result of the Portuguese contact with west African especially in Africa in the  15thcentury. Slavery was not an important component of the trans-Atlantic slave trade in the early 15th century.
