BETTER EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM TODAY; A BRIGHTER FUTURE TOMORROW

When you talk of any educational system - there are two important aspects to it - curriculum and pedagogy where Curriculum is what you teach and pedagogy is how you teach it.
Ghana’s educational system is in jeopardy because, the development of our beloved country should have been greater than our current situation after 60years.
After 60 years, we need to adopt practical knowledge based education.
It would develop the competent level, creativity, innovative and entrepreneurial skills of students.
The theoretical knowledge based education only produce certificates after practicing chew and pour for years in school. Practical knowledge learning enables students’ to grab skills which helps them stand in any job or work field. It provides suitable logic and understanding about the course.
Our industries are suffering and students are also challenged because, some would have to wake up in the night or dawn to make sure they understand the course  studying while others wait till exams is approaching then they chew and pour to pass their exams.
Meanwhile the benchmark most employers seek when recruiting graduates for jobs is characterised by candidates’ possession of practical experience together with the key competences of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Some companies ask six years working experience and the minimum is three years working experience. This is unrealistic and mean to undergraduates.

*We*  *Need*  *Practical’s*
This has created a gap between what employers are looking for in employees and what the universities are churning out, graduates looking for jobs in many cases do not have the right set of skills, expertise and competencies to be able to get the jobs they want.
This is because, the only practical experience they get is during their National Service. How? After schooling from Primary, through Senior High School to Tertiary and the only way a student could put his or her knowledge to practice is when the person complete tertiary which is even one year. There are few exceptions when it comes to those in Training Colleges and Science related courses.
I stand to be corrected, don’t you think the curriculum used to teach these students or graduates are a little bit out of date because 10years ago, what I was studying in primary, it is still same. The focus is so much on theoretical teaching methods, it is high time Ghana Education Service (GES) and Government would find way where from Senior high School a student can start practicing his or her profession.

For instance, if I want to do journalism, I will start practicing news gathering, reporting and writing from SHS so by the time I get to tertiary. I have the basics, and I would have worked on my competence and skills hence, all that I need is just to upgrade myself at the tertiary level by applying the ethics and laws of the profession. With proper training and mentoring, after tertiary, I will graduate to become a better journalist and more professional.
Unlike our current educational system, I can say on authority that, some students are in SHS who do not know what they would want to do in future so they are just learning to meet their fate.
Government should change the curriculum to 80 per cent practical knowledge base learning and remaining theoretical learning like other countries ( Norway , Canada, Finland, etc) are doing.
Our education must change to suit our job market! Our education must change project Ghana! Our education must change to produce great professionals!

*Education*  *and*  *the*  *Job*  *Market*
The ones who are brilliants also get scholarship opportunity to travel abroad and end up not coming back, so the Europeans always find a way to tap into our rich resources. Government must sit up, else Ghana Beyond Aid will never be possible. We need great minds, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial skills so Ghana can achieve “Ghana Beyond Aid” agenda.

How can we bridge the gap? Academic institutions should be a little more realistic and should educate their students for employment as a large number of graduating students would not be able to get job after their education.
There is the need for local businesses in the country to invest in the training, development and retention of their staff to increase productivity.
Since jobs are hard to find, people looking for jobs must equip themselves with the required skills and competencies or they would be risking being unemployed for years. Youth of today want quick money, I would encourage you to engage in volunteerism in order to acquire more experience.
There is a need for inexperienced trainees to be mentored and coached when we get in contact with them at our various work place, communities and neighbourhood.
I believe when we do this, we will grow our industries together and to make our economy a better one. Ghana is our motherland!
