WORLD FOLKLORE DAY

Folklore is the traditional art, literature, knowledge and practice that is disseminated largely through oral, written and behavioural example.

Folklore is the collection of fictional stories about animals and people of the cultural myths, jokes, songs, tales and even quotes. It is a description of culture, which has been passed down verbally from generation to generation in any written or oral form and it is also known as oral tradition.

Folklore was first coined by William John in 1846 and they were popularly known as antiquities or literature.

The happenings in society which could not be proven yet true were preserved through oral narration passed down from generation to generation. From the stories of infamous witches, wizard, blood sucking vamps, sirens, mermaids, demons, spirits, werewolves, heroes and heroines.

The thing about folklore is that, they inspire simple and logical thinking by providing deeper and greater insight to life and living. The real essence of all things is our culture through literature and storytelling. Folklore makes us understand our culture, why we do things, why we conform to certain practices and traditions, why we want to know our people, our music.

We remember and celebrate tales and folklore for enriching our traditions and heritage by inspiring us to know our roots.
