Gups consultative meeting with it's members
Leadership of Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) on Saturday 12th January 2019 engaged SRC Presidents and Local GUPS Presidents of member Institutions in a consultative meeting at Wisconsin International University College, Accra.
The chairman of the sitting, *H.E Justice Aboagye-Sarpong*, President of the Union, in his key note address, indicated that radical changes that transform society largely depends on students who are mostly vibrant in social activities.
He encouraged SRC’s to make their presence felt and let their impact help transform our ailing society. He reiterated the fact that the Union belongs to the SRC’s and until they rise and demand accountability for its activities, greedy and self-seeking people will encroach on their property.
Knowing the challenges the Union has gone through over the period, a consensus was reached on building the structures of the Union and closing in on loop holes that has caused divisions in the Union over the years. It was agreed that a constitutional review committee be formed at the next General Assembly to review the constitution and propose amendment where necessary, to meet the current needs of the fast changing society of which GUPS is a stakeholder.
H.E Justice Aboagye Sarpong made it known that as part of measures for transforming the Union, relevant committees need to be established as soon as possible to help steer the Union to a good direction. Among the proposed committees are the branding committee which will be headed by *H.E Terrick Torgbor Obodai, SRC President of University of Professional Studies Accra*. This is to put life in the fading identity of the union. GUPS week celebration committee, vetting committee, electoral reform committee, judicial board committee and audit board committee were all proposed committees when approved by the General Assembly, would be established as soon as possible to help revive the Union.
Sheik as the GUPS President is affectionately called promised to avoid the conducting of elections at night which has been a problem to the Union from time immemorial. He further stated that, he together with his Executives, will make sure that anybody who is not a student will be prevented from voting during election and to achieve this a proper electoral album will be compiled to ensure a free and fair election.
"All SRC Presidents should do well to pay their dues before Congress to help us get adequate time for preparation towards Congress" Sheik said.
He also made it known that GUPS is collaborating with MASLOC to help furnish the National secretariat of the Union to enhance easy access to Executives by member institutions and also embarking on developmental projects for sustainable income for the Union and this will help the Union to be financially independent in other not to depend on politicians always for assistance.
In the process of deliberation, SRC executives had the opportunity to air their views on the bruised nature of the mother Union of all students, National Union of Ghana Students,(NUGS). It was reiterated that, GUPS as a Bloc of NUGS remains committed, working hand in hand with NUGS Executives and stakeholders to redeem the image of the Union.
*H.E. Tinkaro Asare Osei , the President of National Union Of Ghana Students (NUGS)*, who passed through the meeting, admitted the challenges confronted by the mother union and admonished all to put in their efforts to help transform union. He stated that in leadership, the first thing you should have is the passion for it, knowledge about it and the power to perform. He added that, the issues happening on our student front today is because of weak structures and adviced all student unions to be part of the reformation process. He encouraged Executives of the Union to be revolutionary leaders in their service to the Ghanaian student.
The *Aboagye- Sarpong Justice* led administration use this opportunity to thank *H.E. Tinkaro Asare Osei* , all SRC'S and local GUPS Executives for honoring the invitation. Assurance was given that all matters discussed would duly be considered as a road map into the future.
