Every 26th July is Independence Day in Liberia, commemorating the 1847 declaration of independence by the US colony of Liberia Beginning in 1822, freed slaves from the US began colonising what today is the nation of Liberia on the west African coast. The colonists ultimately set up a government modeled on the US Constitution and declared their independence in 1847. The US did not oppose and try to put down the “rebellion”. However, there was long tension in Liberia between the descendants of settlers and those of the original tribes inhabiting the region. This tension played a big role in the civil war that raged in Liberia for 14 years, beginning in 1989. Finally, a free election put Charles Taylor in office as president in 1997, and democratic rule was reaffirmed. "Everybody is quick to point accusing fingers at the reckless irresponsible policeman who assaulted the nursing mother at the Savings and "Laons" company recently. But you see, there are similar assaults going on in our homes, offices, institutions and public places. Employees are being manhandled and abused by their bosses. Husbands are beating wives and vice versa, wives are maltreating house helps, boyfriends are molesting girlfriends, etc etc. People work for donkey hours and are paid peanuts amidst regular verbal and emotional abuses. Day in day out, casual workers and shop attendants receive numerous verbal assaults from owners and customers. I wonder how many people get slapped in this country each day. I totally condemn that policeman for that his unexplained irresponsible act. In like manner, I condemn that savings and "laons" company for what happened.
